The Pier opened for the season on April 1. Although the water is still quite cold, fish are already biting in the bay. April 14 - Fish are already being caught on the Pier. Tautog, short stripers and skates have been biting and yesterday the first shad and dogfish were caught. April 24 - The shad blitz is on. Hundreds of hickory shad were caught this past week and it's sure to continue this week. There were also scores of short stripers in the mix; and a few tautog. April 28 - John reports lots of fish biting on the Pier this week, including tautog, shad, stripers, dogfish, skates and puffers. May 6 - Bob reports that well over a thousand shad were caught this past week, often two at a time! And, at the same time, the tautog bite has definitely picked up with a few nice keepers in the mix. The striper bite also continues, along with some sea robins, a few small blues and some puffers ... something for everybody. Check out our Memorable Catches page, and come on down and catch some fish! May 19 - The highligt of the day this morning was a 23 inch seatrout caught on a spec rig. Bob reports that some really nice bluefish in the 20-25" range are biting. A few have hit on lures, but most are biting on mullet rigs or cut bait on bluefish rigs. There are still a lot of shad biting on spec rigs, especially on the incoming tide. And, some stripers have been surprising some of the people fishing for shad And, of course, if you let your bait sit too long, you might catch a skate (or a horseshoe crab)! June 8 - Bear reports some nice blues are being caught, along with shad, a few flounder, some puffers and a trigger fish. Flounder fishing should be picking up as the water gets warmer. June 17 - Still lots of shad, a few flounder and some big rays getting a lot of attention! |
